«We highly recommend our stay at Hotel Canaloa organized for us by Felipe at Sumak Travel. Our guide, Ramiro, was knowledgeable and was quite comfortable shifting between Spanish and English – a skill which was useful for our group. In addition, and this was very important to us, he grew up in a nearby indigenous community. This gave us a perspective altogether different from tours we’ve experienced in Ecuador or Costa Rica that were more focused on animal-spotting. When visiting the nearby community, we saw how tourism has contributed to its development and how the five tribes work together to make decisions. The meals were excellent, using fresh, local ingredients, masterfully prepared and served with attentiveness and smiles. Seriously, the food was better than our meals in Bogota and Medellin. Our accommodations were comfortable and gave us a lovely view of the sunset over the river. The manager adjusted our activities based on our interests and environmental limitations. Each of our local guides seemed genuinely enthusiastic about sharing their world with us. We did not want to leave!”
